What is shilajit (also known as mumijo, mumio, mumiyo)?

Shilajit that is purified of additives has black colour and is shiny on surface. It has a consistency similar to asphalt. Almost immediately dissolves by body heat (on palm). It has an unmistakable bitter taste and a characteristic smell. Dissolves in water easily, but is not soluble in alcohol. Fine sediment after stirring must be minimal.

From the chemical point of view shilajit is a natural mix of organic and inorganic matters. It consists of 26 microelements, 10 metallic oxides, 6 amino acids, steroids, phospholipids, range of vitamins, ethereal oils and other biologically active substances.

The word mumijo literally means “protecting body against diseases”, “body preserving”. The term “mum” means growth in areas where Persian Empire was situated.

Shilajit doesn’t have anything in common with mummies (mumia vera aegyptiaca), a substance which is a mixture of powder from mummies conserved with asphalt and resin.

Shilajit (mumijo, mumio, mumiyo) deposits are located in high mountains of Asia. Local people gather mumijo in caves and rock fissures in hardly accessible terrains at altitudes above 3000 meters. A group sets out for a few weeks’ journey to mountains which results in a few bags of raw mumijo. Gathering of mumijo is usually the only source of income of these people and they keep locations of its deposits in secret. Information about these locations are passed from father to son. Mumijo is found on walls and ceilings of caves or in rifts as dropstones or small stalactites which remind tears by its shape (therefore the name Tears of the Mountains). Tibetan people call mumijo "Brogshaun", which can be translated as mountain oil. Indians refer to it as "Shilajit" and the Arabic equivalent is "Chafiz-al-Adžsod" or "Arakul džibal", meaning mountain sweat.

Adaptogen
Shilajit (mumijo, mumio, mumio, mumiyo) is a strong adaptogen with excellent features. In order to classify a substance as an adaptogen it has to fulfill these conditions:

  • It must be TOTALLY non-toxic and ABSOLUTELY harmless to the organism.
  • An adaptogen must normalise physical functions regardless of existing (also sick) condition.
  • An adaptogen produces a nonspecific response in the body – an increased resistance against multiple stressors including physical, chemical, or biological agents.

Although it doesn’t seem so, these conditions are very demanding. As opposed to drugs which have side effects, adaptogens must have beneficial influence on the organism without disturbing or damaging it. There are only very few substances with adaptogenic features and only few of them so strong.

Ingredients: 100% pure shilajit (mumijo) cleansed with water from additives

Shilajit (mumijo, mumio, mumiyo) therapy: For preventive usage administer ½ tablet of shilajit (0.1g) for each 30kg of body weight 1-2 times a day. For acute or severe conditions is the dose mostly multiplied, i.e. 1 tablet for each 30kg of body weight. For instance, if a child weighed 15kg, 1 dose would be ¼ tablet of shilajit for preventive usage.

According to an old Kyrgyzstani legend the following tale has once happened:
A wealthy khan Faridun was travelling with his company across vast mountain areas, hunting for a delicate Asian wildlife. The hunters were pursuing a doe that had been scathed by two arrows. Despite being wounded they lost sight of it. The upcoming night made tracking it increasingly difficult, hence they decided to continue after sunrise. After several days of tracking the trace ascended to higher regions, up to a large mountain covern. Thus, the hunters set the torches ablaze and set off on a search. A while later they found the injured animal as it was rubbing its wounds against a strange black-brown stone and even licking it every now and then. The huntsmen were surprised how quickly the doe healed in spite of the severe injuries caused by arrows. They sent a messenger to the khan to inform him about what happened. The khan ordered the hunters to catch the animal alive and bring also a piece of that "black-brown stone". Healers of the mighty khan examined the "mysterious stone" and it is said that they were able to cure many diseases with it. The mountains were thoroughly investigated thereafter and the stone was extracted and hidden in a treasury. Later on, over the old trade routes along the legendary silk road, shilajit got to the Western Asia and Greece, where Aristotle and later even his student Alexander the Great studied its properties intensively. From this period there is also a written record about researching the effects of shilajit on humans and about diverse forms of its application. (Dr. Wolfgang Windman, Mumio-tradiční přírodní léčivo, 2006, publ. Fontána).
